There are many other reasons besides profiting off of war why Halliburton's stock has doubled since 9/11. Try this one on for size (Washington Post):
Federal agents have identified 10 suspected illegal immigrants working at a naval base near New Orleans where the Halliburton Co. subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root is leading hurricane reconstruction, according to a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
A spokesman for the base said last night that 13 workers were barred from the base this week for lack of proper work papers, and that they were employees of Texas-based BMS Catastrophe. Officials of the company could not be reached yesterday for comment.
KBR spokeswoman said the firm will look into any allegations that its subcontractors have violated the law or the company's code of conduct. She could not immediately say whether BMS was working for KBR.
Oh how wonderful. Once again, we have our priorities glued on the wrong way. There are so many unemployed legal U.S. citizens along the Gold Coast who lack health insurance, home and other necessities that are looking for work. Halliburton is turning them away for illegal immigrants just to pay them less and keep the company stock price one dollar higher.
Maybe this is an indirect protest for FEMA's decision two weeks ago to renegotiate all their reconstruction contracts. Before the rebidding took place, 10 companies with government ties, such as Carnival Cruise Lines (#1 sea transport GOP campaign donor), were awarded the largest contracts -- most of them no-bid. Don't you like how this patronage system works?
I think I understand this now. If you're a friend, you either receive a no-bid contract or end up being nominated to the Supreme Court. If you're a foe, then you are unpatriotic and only embolden the enemy. One can learn a lot about smear tactics after watching this GOP majority for this long.
