Why delay the Voting Rights Act?

A number of House Republicans are trying to turn back time by delaying the extension to the Voting Rights Act, which is about to expire.  The legislation before the House of Representatives calls for the law, which was originally signed by Lyndon Johnson, to be extended for 25 years.

Speaking of the Voting Rights Act, this is just one of many new ideas that liberals helped create during the 20th century.  As the character Matt Santos in the NBC show the West Wing said during a fictional presidential debate, liberals have a lot to be proud of:

"What did liberals do that was so offensive to the liberal party? I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things."

So if it turns out that the Voting Rights Act is delayed for much longer, expect to hear a huge outcry.
