Spielberg to make documentary about global warming

Picphoto112706spielberg  Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth sounded the alarm on our growing climate crisis.  Now, movie director Steven Spielberg wants to make a global warming film of his own -- but this one will have a much different tone.  While Gore's film was mostly quantitative and spelled out what could happen, Spielberg wants to give the audience some examples of what is being done by some to combat it:

A recent CNN Money article about "green design" architect/environmentalist William McDonough reveals that Spielberg plans to create a documentary about what is being done to stop and counteract the effects of global warming.

"[Steven Spielberg] had just seen Al Gore's movie and felt it would be great to make a film about what people are doing about [global warming]," McDonough told CNN.

"The ending of Gore's film is tragic, because after showing the scale of the catastrophe, he says, 'There's some hope here,' but the hope is what? Buy hybrid? Change your lightbulbs? It's not enough!"

Leave it to Steven Spielberg to find and shine a light of hope in a bleak situation, and it's this forward thinking that could move the collective public conscience past (very real) world's end threats in the media and into thinking about a progressive and hopeful future should Spielberg's documentary reach the wide audiences a Spielberg production generally finds.

Gore's film was certainly one of its kind.  On the other hand, it only spent about three minutes explaining to the audience what each person could do to help counteract the threat facing our world.  Spielberg hopes to spend more time on the positives, to help send the message that it shouldn't be difficult.

This is good to hear. I hope Gore's movie will continue to inspire others. An Inconvenient Truth was not perfect but it made the issue mainstream I think and that's all it needed to do.

I disagree somewhat with one comment here: Changing light bulbs and getting a hybrid are not enough? Well, it seems so far that doing these two things is too much of a task for most people. Almost no one owns a hybrid. right?

But in the big picture they are right: doing just those things are not enough. The only way to really do enough is to elect a government that will take the issue seriously. Global Warming and Energy Independence require government solutions because they are such massive problems.

Until then, it's up to us nobodies to change our light bulb buying habits.

By the way: here is a link for a 9 yr light bulb. i use them and they work great. In fact I'll be buying my family some for Christmas :)
