Blue Radar
As I post each morning, here are some of the political stories that might not be worthy of their own posts, but are nonetheless newsworthy:
- The military base in Fort Lewis, WA is cutting back on the number of funerals it will hold for US soldiers. Instead of having funerals after each death, they will hold one collective funeral each month.
- Over the last few weeks, President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki have been talking much more frequently. Sometimes during the meetings, writes the NYT, they discuss their faith in God.
- The Senate Judiciary Committee will review Alberto Gonzales' past statements to see whether to open a perjury investigation against the Attorney General.
- Andrew Cohen gave the most directly critical response to Alberto Gonzales' testimony today. In a column titled, "Gonzo on the Hill: A Comedic Tragedy," Cohen said Gonzales' performance yesterday in front of the Judiciary Committee was a disgrace: "Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales deserves to be fired for his testimony Tuesday alone; for morphing into Jon Lovitz's famous 'pathological liar' character as he tried to dodge and duck responsibility before the Senate Judiciary Committee not just for his shameful leadership at Justice but also his shameless role in visiting an ailing John Ashcroft in the hospital to try to strong-arm him into renewing the warrantless surviellance program. Can anyone out there remember a worse, less-inspiring, less confidence-inducing performance on Capitol Hill? I cannot."
- Fewer people in Middle Eastern countries view suicide bombings as justified than they did five years ago.
- A fence along the US-Mexican border might harm habitat, says the Wildlife Conservation Society.
- During an interview with the Quad-City Times, Hillary Clinton called Barack Obama "irresponsible and frankly naive" for saying during the debates that his administration would meet with leaders of countries considered to be US foes.
- Political analyst David Paul Kuhn explains that in order to beat Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama's campaign is using the same strategy Ronald Reagan implemented during the 1980 primaries: "Awash in money and publicity but behind in the polls, Barack Obama, advisers say, is planning a classic insurgent's campaign to wrest the Democratic nomination from Hillary Rodham Clinton -- one that relies on a surge of momentum from early-state victories and faces a make-or-break test in the South Carolina primary."
- Randy Enwright, who has ties to former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, will become the new chairman of Fred Thompson's campaign.
If we left anything out, feel free to add any stories in the comment box.
