Last year, there were a record number 112 cloture motions. In 2010, even though we are just in the month of March, there have already been 40. You wonder why nothing ever gets done! As a minority party, the more you block, the less that gets done, and the more you can blame it on the party in power. The Republicans would rather win the election this November than do the people's business. For them, the end justifies the means.
By comparison, there have been the same amount of cloture motions between January of 2009 and today as there were between World War I and the moon landing. The GOP has shut down the Senate altogether.
If the Democrats and progressive interests want to save themselves in November, they need to focus squarely on this issue.
